On a 4.2-acre site in Schofield Barracks, the 25,000 sf Center and its outdoor activity spaces meet the Army's programming require- ments and National After-school Alliance accreditation.
Child Development Center, Ages 6-10
The design/build team of Mason Architects and Nan, Inc. designed and constructed this Child Development Center in Schofield Barracks to provide a safe, secure, and age-appropriate indoor/outdoor activity center for up to 195 children, ages 6-10 years, and a staff of 25 adults.
The center contains an atrium, activity rooms, offices, a computer lab, kitchen, laundry, gathering areas, and a multi-purpose space as well as outdoor activity areas. It was planned to provide staff with visual control of the entire area and to be relatively maintenance free.
Its exterior walls of CMU are faced with a ceramic tile wainscot, interior walls are gypsum board on metal stud framing, the ceilings are of acoustic tile, and the roof of standing seam metal is painted green to reflect the heat.
The design includes intrusion detection and video surveillance systems and is connected to an energy-monitoring and control system and air conditioning.
The building received LEED Silver Certification and complies with the Energy Policy Act of 2005 with its low-flow plumbing fixtures, low-E glass windows, low wattage lighting and daylighting, the use of recycled and rapidly renewable materials, and the use of insulation and heat-reflective surfaces for thermal comfort.

The Center serves children, ages 6-10, who live in the Schofield Barracks commu-nity.

It provides safe, secure, and age-appropriate activity spaces, both indoors and out.

The atrium will be a "mall for kids" where they can sit, talk, eat, play games, and just hang out.
