The original rusticated concrete block walls, roof, and wood floors of the 1908 circuit Courthouse Building were retained, the exterior windows were salvaged, and the louver shutters were reconstructed on the basis of the two that remained.
Wailuku Courthouse
In 1991, the State of Hawaii was scheduled to gut the 1908 circuit courthouse until Maui County intervened, both to save the interiors of the historic building, if possible, and to gain needed office space. Mason Architects, in preparing a Historic Resource and Conceptual Design Report, determined that most of the interior of the building could be saved and adapted for reuse as offices.
- The exterior was restored to its 1962 appearance so that a historically-compatible addition made that year could be retained in the restoration.
- Interior entry lobbies and the second-floor courtroom were restored.
- Modern air conditioning and electrical, data, and telephone systems were installed, and a passenger elevator was added for handicapped access.
- Exhibits of the history of the building and the period of martial law in Maui were key design elements of the lobbies.
- The project won an "Award of Merit" in 1994 from the Honolulu Chapter, AIA, and awards from Historic Hawaii and the Maui Historic Society.
