Buildings 278, 281, 287 Marine Barracks

Mason Architects completed the Marine Barracks Preservation Plan for the former garrison site at Pearl Harbor. The Plan, prepared with Helber Hastert & Fee Planners, described the history of the complex, analyzed the structure and materials of the buildings, and estimated costs for rehabilitating them. It paid particular attention to the eight World War II wooden barracks bordering the Parade Ground. Following this study, MAI completed documents for the repair and adaptive reuse of three of the buildings as administrative offices.

  • The historic character of the buildings was main-tained, though termite-damaged sections had to be demolished and rebuilt.
  • Hazardous materials were removed, interior walls refinished, and new utilities installed.
  • Later additions and partitions were taken down, and non-original doors and windows were replaced with copies of the originals.
  • Buildings 278 and 287 were equipped with a new secure computer facility, and Building 281 was renovated for use as a Military Entrance Processing (MEPS) facility.
