The new building fills the footprint of the original building and reflects many features of the historic Chinatown storefront.
Stack Building
- The owner of the c.1905 building at the corner of Pauahi Street and Nuuanu Avenue in Chinatown retained Mason Architects to restore it and its later additions for adaptive reuse as retail space. Plans were barely underway when the roof and most of the street-facing walls of the building collapsed early on the morning of October 10, 2001.
- The lava rock walls of an addition and two of the original brick walls survived, and within the old walls Mason Architects has designed a new building to match the scale and proportions of the original. The ceilings of the one-story building range between 14 and 16 feet above the floor.
- Retail spaces open onto a small paved courtyard with a garden in the rear of the building.
- A block away stands the Hawaii Theatre, at the center of the Historic Core Precinct of the Chinatown Special District, which is redefining itself as a vibrant new venue for shops, galleries, restaurants, and professional offices.

After many years of housing a popular Chinese restaurant, the building was on the verge of collapse.
Parapet, decorative cornices, metal canopies - all were lost in the rubble when the building collapsed.
