The historic shell of this 1920 building, Building 550, was preserved; its interior was gutted except for floors and stairways, and new facilities were constructed within.
Buildings 550 and 551, Quad E
Mason Architects provided the architectural design for the renovation of Buildings 550 and 551 in Quadrangle E, built in 1920 and now included in the Schofield Barracks Historic District and listed on the National Register.
The Design/Build renovation, completed with Nan, Inc., is part of the Whole Barracks Renewal program, in which MAI previously participated as historical architect.
The goal of our design was to retain and restore the historically significant characteristics of the buildings' exteriors while integrating measures to ensure Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP), sustainability, and ADA accessibility in the renovated structures.
Building 550 houses a battalion headquarters, operations facilities for four companies, and storage areas for equipment and arms. Building 551, once three open floors of barracks, is now partitioned into 66 two-person living units and 18 one-person units for enlisted men and women.
The project achieved a Silver level under the Army's SPiRiT rating system and won a Historic Preservation Honor Award from the Historic Hawaii Foundation in 2008. Photos: MAI

Quadrangle E was built in 1920 to house infantry regiments. The quads form the core of the Schofield Barracks Historic District.

In the renovation, the door and window patterns were preserved and new doors and windows were installed to match the originals.
