Built of plastered coral block and field stone in 1856, the Old Lahaina Courthouse has been restored for use by the County of Maui.
Old Lahaina Courthouse
The Old Lahaina Courthouse was the original seat of justice for the Kingdom of Hawaii. It was built by Kamehameha III, who gave Hawaii its first constitution and proclaimed the Great Mahele land ownership system. In continuous use since 1856, the building had been renovated in 1925 but was again in need of repair from basement flooding, termites, and invasive roots from the nearby banyan tree.
Mason Architects prepared a Historic Structures Report to evaluate the physical condition of the building, summarize its history, and create a schematic design for its restoration and adaptive reuse.
- Lighting, electrical, telephone, and plumbing systems were replaced.
- Historic finishes were repaired, and display panels and signage were installed.
- A new handicapped ramp, an elevator, and toilet rooms were built.
- The structure was upgraded to satisfy seismic codes, and new mission tile roofing was installed, restoring the c. 1925 appearance of the building.
- Restoration of the building required Special Management Area and Historic District Reports, as well as an Environmental Assessment Report.

Beneath the restored surfaces of the building, new utilities were installed; before the restoration, extension cords had been used in lieu of electrical wiring.

Those who do not wish to climb the historic staircase may take the new elevator installed in the building.
