Kaua'i County Building - Annex 1
The Kaua'i County Building - Annex 1 was designed in 1930 by Hart Wood in Lihu'e, Kaua'i, where it is an early example of the Spanish Mission-Revival Style.
Though originally built to house Territorial employees, it was later used by the Social Security Administration, the State Tax Division, and the Kaua'i County Police Department before becoming vacant in 2002.
In 2007 the County of Kaua'i initiated plans to restore the historic building, which is listed on the National Register as a contributing element to the Lihu'e Civic Center Historic District, for use as offices for the Election Division and for walk-in voting.
Mason Architects' work included:
- Major structural repairs, including repairs to the cracked floor slab and termite-damaged roof timbers
- Replication of the original wood entry doors based on the original Hart Wood drawings
- Restoration or replication of interior stile and rail wood doors and refurbishing of bronze door hardware
- Restoration and cleaning of original polished concrete floors and restrooms' marble floors and wainscotting
- Extensive interior plaster repairs and repainting
- Installation of new electrical, air-conditioning, security, telecom, and data systems
- Accessibility improvements
