Old Girls School/Retreat

The Kohala Girls School was established in 1874 by Reverend Elias Bond as part of the Kohala Mission Station on the Island of Hawaii. The school is included in the 50-acre Bond Historic District, which is listed on the National and Hawaii Registers of Historic Places. In 1998 the New Moon L.L.C. purchased about 600 acres of land, including the Historic District, which it promised to maintain and preserve.

  • In 1999, Mason Architects prepared for Bishop Museum a Historic Structures Report to assess the condition of the buildings, propose changes to accurately restore them, and suggest ways to adapt them for reuse.
  • The exteriors of the seven buildings at the Old Girls School, which date from 1874 to 1922, have been restored, and work on the interiors is underway.
  • The work on the buildings follows the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Rehabilitation.
  • For example, the Carriage House (right) was lifted and a new concrete grade beam and footings were laid to support a new wood foundation structure, replacing the heavily deteriorated existing foundation.
  • Research turned up a 1940s photo (bottom right) showing that the building once had a lanai, which has now been restored to the building.
  • These buildings will be used as a retreat center by the Contemplative Education Center, which will host programs focusing on Healing Encounters, Inspired Action, Land Stewardship, and Roots of the Present.
