On the grounds of ´Iolani Palace, the Old Archives Building was built in 1906 and added to in 1929.
Old Archives (Kanaina Building)
After 1950, the Old Archives Building was used for general
state offices; the rooms were subdivided and the floors covered with vinyl tile.
The Friends of ´Iolani
Palace asked Mason Architects to restore the 5000-square-foot building to house
the Friends’ offices, staff and meeting rooms, and public restrooms.
- Key spaces in the building were restored to their original state;
terrazzo floors and marble baseboards were uncovered, and original doors and hardware were replicated for
use in the newly restored spaces.
- Though the original copper-and-steel-framed windows are now operational, central air conditioning was installed.
- An unobtrusive ramp was constructed
to allow handicapped access.
- The Building Industry Association of Hawaii awarded the project its
Grand Renaissance Award in 1991.
