Design features such as the large windows and wide eaves adapt the pavilions to the high and dry environment.
Sims Residence
In Kamuela on the Island of Hawaii, the Sims residence sits at an elevation
of more than 2000 feet and receives less than 10 inches of rainfall per year.
Trellised decks and shaded lanais link the two pavilions and provide ample space
for outdoor living.
- Large windows, deep overhangs, peaked skylights,
and gable vents provide natural ventilation to keep the interiors cool.
- The first pavilion houses a studio and sleeping lofts
surrounded by wide, partially trellised decks.
- The second pavilion, completed in 1997, adds two bedrooms
and bathrooms and large storage areas.

Trellises filter the sunlight on the deck.
The decks link the pavilions, and the roof's deep overhang shades the passage between them.
