Inside Rusti's and Violet's enclosure.
The Rusti and Violet Residence
Mason Architects designed this 8168-foot single-family custom residence near Diamond Head to integrate indoor/outdoor living through the creation of open areas surrounded by vegetation, reliance on natural lighting and ventilation, and use of indigenous materials such as palm fronds for shading and grass for flooring.
- Open to the sky, the home is surrounded by 15-foot walls of reinforced wire mesh, which are curved at the top to provide maximum security without diminishing the home's spatial ambiance.
- A large banyan tree and climbing structures in the active living space provide both recreation and vantage points for viewing the surrounding area and its rich cultural milieu.
- Two small concrete bedrooms equipped with swinging ropes and hammocks afford privacy, and the adjacent day room allows space for dining and social interactions.
- The design of the residence reflects the upwardly mobile yet relaxed, almost hedonistic lifestyle of its occupants.
