Ke Kailani

Mason Architects is one of five local architectural firms invited to present conceptual designs for custom single-family residences at Ke Kailani, a 65-acre development within the Kohala coast's Mauna Lani Resort. MAI designed this spacious three-bedroom home as an example of what we envision for the nearly 1.5-acre estate lots in Ke Kailani's shoreline community of parks, ponds, villas, and recreational facilities surrounding Mauna Lani's southern golf course.

By focusing on close collaboration with the client and a sensitivity to the site, Mason Architects allows the design of each residence to find its own form. These drawings reflect four goals that MAI attempts to accomplish in all its residential design work:

  • Procession from public to private space: The curved driveway and landscaping shield the house from the street. The path from the drive court through the courtyard to the entry lanai leads through successive steps to more private space, then diverges; one path leads to the living and dining rooms with open views of the ocean and golf course, the other to the seclusion of the bedrooms.
  • Understatement: Quality of materials, proportion, and careful detailing - not ostentation - are the measure of the home's elegance.
  • Indoor/Outdoor Integration: Entries and primary circulation paths open onto a landscaped courtyard that is both open and protected. Large windows and lanai make the walls more transparent, and trellises provide porous frameworks for plants that become part of the building itself. The home's single-room depth and interconnected spaces ensure effective natural ventilation or central air conditioning.
  • Use of Natural Materials: A limited palette and simplified design details reveal the grain of wood, the texture of unpainted stucco, and the colors and patterns of stone.
