Bobby Benson Center
The Bobby Benson Center in Kahuku, Oahu is a residential treatment center for teenagers with drug and alcohol problems. Built on land contributed by the Estate of James Campbell, the Center is bordered by agricultural fields, a residential area, and Kahuku Hospital.
- Four residential units and a 5000-square-foot Administration/Dining Building cluster around a landscaped open area to ensure privacy and create a sense of enclosure.
- The buildings are constructed of sand-blasted concrete and wood and are naturally ventilated except in the office areas.
- Warm colors and friendly forms reduce the buildings' institutional look and provide a feeling of nurturing and hope.
- The project's $1.85 million cost was paid for by donations from the public.
