Under contract to Parsons Brinckerhoff, Mason Architects has participated in two studies to identify and evaluate historic resources along the proposed alignment segments of the rapid transit system.

In 2006 we prepared a Technical Report that supported the Alternatives Analysis phase of the project, evaluating approximately 1000 properties along the various alignments for potential National Register eligibility. This report included all structures that would be 50 years or older by the estimated project completion date of 2015. Initial field studies with photographs allowed preliminary evaluations, primarily of those properties that had distinctive features of a type, period, or method of construction. Further evaluation of NR eligibility was to be done in a later phase of the project.

Work on the second Technical Report started in 2008 and included a different geographic study area and buildings dated 1968 and older. This inventory supported the Draft Environmental Impact phase of the project, focussing on historic resources in the core alignment, which runs from East Kapolei to Ala Moana Center, but also including those proposed extensions to the West Kapolei, Waikiki, and the University. More research was done for this second report. The survey work included evaluations of individual buildings as well as groups of buildings of similar age or type that could qualify as historic districts within the Area of Potential Effect (APE).

For each property evaluated as NR-eligible, MAI created a form describing its architecture and assessing its integrity and historical significance; we also created simpler forms for properties considered ineligible. A total of 1072 inventory and evaluation forms were prepared.
