Preservation Research and Planning

Historic Structures Report, Maui Jinsha Shrine
MAI completed a Historic Structures Report for this Shinto shrine, built by Japanese immigrants in 1915 and moved piece by piece to a new location to avoid demolition.

1950s Buildings in Waikiki and Honolulu
MAI's architectural historians have prepared a 152-page photo essay on buildings built in the 1950s, when local architects imported the mainland's International Style or explored Hawaii's own regional idiom.

Building Preservation Plan of 26 Museum Houses, Hickam Air Force Base
Twenty-six houses were chosen to represent each historic type of housing built for officers and enlisted men from 1937 through 1941. Mason Architects prepared a Building Preservation Plan to retain the historic features of each house and guide any future modifications to it.

Historic Structures Report of the Bond Homestead and Old Girls School (with Bishop Museum)
The Bond Homestead was established in 1841 in North Kohala by missionary Elias Bond. The first buildings of the Girls School were built in 1874 on nearby land owned by the Bonds. In 1998 these lands were purchased by New Moon L.L.C. Mason Architects searched written records and made on-site studies to understand how the buildings evolved over time, assessed their present condition, and made preliminary recommendations on how to accurately restore them.

Historic American Building Surveys
Mason Architects has conducted over 1,900 HABSs for historic structures on U.S. military installations, most of them on Oahu Each survey includes a written history and architectural photography of the building. These surveys are submitted to, and curated by, the Library of Congress.

Cultural Resource Management Plans
These plans determine the historic significance of buildings and recommend how they should be managed. Mason Architects, working as consultant to planning firms, has evaluated thousands of buildings throughout Hawaii and the Pacific and developed tools to make their surveys more thorough and efficient.

Integrated Cultural Resource Management Plan for Pearl Harbor (with Helber, Hastert & Fee)
Mason Architects delineated twelve historic zones within the Complex; completed a history, an analysis, and planning guidelines for each zone; and updated and refined the Navy's database of historic facilities.

Honolulu High-Capacity Transit Corridor Project, Historic Resources Technical Reports
Mason Architects prepared two technical reports identifying and evaluating historic structures for National Register eligibility along proposed alignments of the rapid transit system. MAI created forms describing the architecture and assessing the integrity and historical significance of properties evaluated as NR-eligible and prepared simpler forms for properties considered ineligible.

Koke'e Design Guidelines
The Design Standards and Guidelines for the Historic Koke'e, Halemanu and Pu'u ka Pele Camp Lots are intended to assist lessees in their preservation of the historic cabins in the Koke'e and Waimea Canyon State Parks, Kauai, and to ensure that new cabins built in the historic district will be built in a complementary style.
