Historic Structures Report,
Bond Homestead and Old Girls School
The Kohala Mission Station was established in North Kohala, Island of Hawaii, in 1839 and developed by the missionary Elias Bond from 1841 until his death in 1896. The 50-acre Bond Historic District, including the Bond Homestead and Kohala Girls' School, is now listed on the National and Hawaii Registers of Historic Places.
- In 1998, the New Moon L. L. C. purchased about 600 acres of land, which includes the historic district.
- As terms of the purchase, New Moon agreed to honor the historic district and keep its buildings intact.
- In 1999, Mason Architects and Bishop Museum worked together to prepare a Historic Structures Report.
- Using documents such as Reverend Bond's 1856-1896 memo books, Mason Architects conducted archival research and on-site field investigations to understand the evolution of building construction on the site over time and assess the condition of the structures.
- MAI proposed changes for accurate period restoration of the fourteen Homestead buildings and suggested to New Moon how the seven buildings in the Old Girls School could be adapted for reuse.
