U.S.S. Arizona Memorial Visitor Center
Each year more than 1.6 million people visit the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial and Visitor Center to gain a better understanding of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. In 2002 plans were made to renovate the existing facilities at Halawa Landing, but continuing settlement of the underlying substrate persuaded the Navy and the National Park Service to demolish the existing facilities, except the two theaters, and to build a new state-of-the-art Visitor Center on the site.
The design architect and prime consultant for this project is Portico Group. Mason Architects is participating in all phases of the design process and is responsible for most of the construction documents.
The new Visitor Center complex will house orientation services, exhibits, theaters, sales areas, restrooms, and office space. It will also include exterior viewing and staging areas, an outdoor amphitheater, shaded areas, and walkways. Anti-terrorism/force protection, ADA accessibility, and sustainable development concepts are incorporated into the project, which is designed to achieve the LEED Silver level of accreditation.
