Contemporary Museum

The Contemporary Museum opened to the public in 1988 in the Alice Cooke Spalding residence, designed by Hart Wood in 1925 in the hills overlooking Honolulu. The Museum contains galleries, a gift shop, a cafe, offices, and storage and work areas. It will expand into a new three-story building and the adjacent building, formerly the Peterson residence.

Mason Architects planned the renovation of the Peterson house and the existing museum to accommodate the expansion with minimal impact on the original layouts, materials, and details of the two historic homes.

  • Gallery spaces in the Cooke Spalding house remain unchanged.
  • The library is being converted to a new gift shop and new educational spaces will be created.
  • The cafe and kitchen will move to the Peterson house.
  • The Peterson house will also contain rooms for a visiting artist, a staff dining room, a library, and offices.
